Horse Art
by Kim Penner

From her rural studio outside Lacombe, Alberta, internationally recognized equine artist Kim Penner creates expressive, detailed horse art rooted in a lifelong connection to the animals she paints.

The Artist — Kim Penner

Kim Penner is an internationally recognized Canadian equine artist based outside Lacombe, Alberta. Her work is known for its accuracy, calm emotional presence, and deep understanding of the horses she paints — a connection shaped through decades of study, observation, and lived experience.

EARLY INSPIRATION

Raised near Morden, Manitoba, Kim developed a genuine love for horses at an early age. She owned horses from the age of ten, forming a close bond with the subjects she would later spend a lifetime painting. Encouraged by her parents, Kim entered her early renderings into local fairs and art festivals, gaining recognition as a talented young artist.

ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT

Kim later studied Fine Arts and Education at the University of Manitoba, where she strengthened her technical foundations — anatomy, proportion, tone, and the ability to translate subtle detail into realism. These skills became the backbone of her distinctive style.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Every painting begins with careful observation. Kim focuses on structure, expression, and the natural personality of each horse, capturing not just likeness but presence. Her landscapes and backgrounds reflect years spent studying the environments that shape the equine world.
